This is Anne Wortham. She is Associate Professor of Sociology at Illinois State University
and continuing Visiting Scholar at Stanford University 's Hoover Institution.

She is a member of the American Sociological Association and the American Philosophical Association.

She has been a John M. Olin Foundation Faculty Fellow, and honored as a Distinguished Alumni of the Year by the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.

In fall 1988 she was one of a select group of intellectuals who were featured in Bill Moyer's television series, "A World of Ideas." The transcript of her conversation with Moyers has been published in his book, A World of Ideas.

Dr. Wortham is author of "The Other Side of Racism: A Philosophical Study of Black Race Consciousness" which analyzes how race consciousness is transformed into political strategies and policy issues.

She has published numerous articles on the implications of individual rights for civil rights policy, and is currently writing a book on theories of social and cultural marginality.

Recently, she has published articles on the significance of multiculturalism and Afrocentricism in education, the politics of victimization and the social and political impact of political correctness. Shortly after an interview in 2004, she was awarded tenure.

Fellow Americans,

Please know: I am Black; I grew up in the segregated South. I did not vote for Barack Obama; I wrote in Ron Paul's name as my choice for president. Most importantly, I am not race conscious. I do not require a Black president to know that I am a person of worth, and that life is worth living. I do not require a Black president to love the ideal of America .

I cannot join you in your celebration. I feel no elation. There is no smile on my face. I am not jumping with joy. There are no tears of triumph in my eyes. For such emotions and behavior to come from me, I would have to deny all that I know about the requirements of human flourishing and survival - all that I know about the history of the United States of America , all that I know about American race relations, and all that I know about Barack Obama as a politician. I would have to deny the nature of the "change" that Obama asserts has come to America .

Most importantly, I would have to abnegate my certain understanding that you have chosen to sprint down the road to serfdom that we have been on for over a century. I would have to pretend that individual liberty has no value for the success of a human life. I would have to evade your rejection of the slender reed of capitalism on which your success and mine depend. I would have to think it somehow rational that 94 percent of the 12 million Blacks in this country voted for a man because he looks like them (that Blacks are permitted to play the race card), and that they were joined by self-declared "progressive" whites who voted for him because he doesn't look like them.

I would have to wipe my mind clean of all that I know about the kind of people who have advised and taught Barack Obama and will fill posts in his administration - political intellectuals like my former colleagues at the Harvard University 's Kennedy School of Government.

I would have to believe that "fairness" is equivalent of justice. I would have to believe that a man who asks me to "go forward in a new spirit of service, in a new service of sacrifice" is speaking in my interest.. I would have to accept the premise of a man that economic prosperity comes from the "bottom up," and who arrogantly believes that he can will it into existence by the use of government force. I would have to admire a man who thinks the standard of living of the masses can be improved by destroying the most productive and the generators of wealth.

Finally, Americans, I would have to erase from my consciousness the scene of 125,000 screaming, crying, cheering people in Grant Park, Chicago irrationally chanting "Yes We Can!" Finally, I would have to wipe all memory of all the times I have heard politicians, pundits, journalists, editorialists, bloggers and intellectuals declare that capitalism is dead - and no one, including especially Alan Greenspan, objected to their assumption that the particular version of the anti-capitalistic mentality that they want to replace with their own version of anti-capitalism is anything remotely equivalent to capitalism.

So you have made history, Americans. You and your children have elected a Black man to the office of the president of the United States , the wounded giant of the world. The battle between John Wayne and Jane Fonda is over - and Fonda won. Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern must be very happy men. Jimmie Carter, too. And the Kennedys have at last gotten their Kennedy look-a-like. The self-righteous welfare statists in the suburbs can feel warm moments of satisfaction for having elected a Black person.

So, toast yourselves: 60s countercultural radicals, 80s yuppies and 90s bourgeois bohemians. Toast yourselves, Black America. Shout your glee Harvard, Princeton , Yale, Duke, Stanford, and Berkeley. You have elected not an individual who is qualified to be president, but a Black man who, like the pragmatist Franklin Roosevelt, promises to - Do Something! You now have someone who has picked up the baton of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society. But you have also foolishly traded your freedom and mine - what little there is left - for the chance to feel good.

There is nothing in me that can share your happy obliviousness. God Help Us all.

Social Security - History  Lesson, still applies.....
Your Social Security: 

Just  in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn't  
know this. It's easy to check out, if you don't believe it. Be sure and  
show it to your kids. They need a little history lesson on what's what  and it 
doesn't matter whether you are Democrat or Republican. Facts are Facts!!!  

Social Security Cards up until the 1980s expressly  stated the number and 
card were not to be used for identification  purposes. Since nearly everyone 
in the United States now has a number,  it became convenient to use it 
anyway and the message was  removed.

Our Social  Security:

Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social  
Security (FICA) Program. He promised: 

1.) That participation  in the Program would be completely  voluntary, 
No longer Voluntary 

2.) That the participants would only have to  pay 
1% of the first $1,400 of their annual 
Incomes into the  Program, 

Now  7.65% 
on the first $90,000  

3.) That the money the participants elected to put  
into the Program would be deductible from 
their income for tax  purposes each year, 

No longer tax deductible 

4.)  That the money the participants put into the 
independent 'Trust  Fund' rather than into the 
general operating fund, and therefore,  would 
only be used to fund the Social Security 
Retirement  Program, and no other 
Government program, and, 

Under Johnson the money was moved  to 
The General Fund and Spent 

5) That the annuity payments to the retirees  would never be taxed as 

Under Clinton & Gore 
Up to  85% of your Social Security can be Taxed 

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years  and are 
now receiving a Social Security check every month -- 
and  then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of 
the money we paid  to the Federal government to 'put 
away' -- you may be interested in  the following: 

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from  the 
independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the 
general fund so  that Congress could spend it? 

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the  democrat 
controlled House and Senate. 

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax  
deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding? 

A: The  Democrat Party. 

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social  
Security annuities? 

A: The Democrat Party, with Al  Gore casting the 
'tie-breaking' deciding vote as President of  the 
Senate, while he was Vice President of the US 

Q: Which Political Party decided to  start
giving annuity payments to immigrants? 


A: That's right!  

Jimmy Carter and the Democrat  Party.  
Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, 
began to  receive Social Security payments! The 
Democrat Party gave these  payments to them, 
even though they never paid a dime into it!  

Then, after  violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn 
around and  tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security 
The worst part  about it is uninformed citizens believe it and believe that 
the  Democrats are "for the people." 
If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of  awareness will be planted 
and maybe changes will 
evolve. Maybe not,  some Democrats are awfully sure of what isn't so. 

But it's worth  a try. How many people can YOU send this to? 

Actions speak  louder than bumper stickers.

Slavery and the Eight Veils

Over the last several years I have evolved and discarded several theories in an attempt to explain why it is that most people cannot see truth -- even when it smacks them in the face. Those of us who can see "the
conspiracy" have participated in countless conversations amongst ourselves that address the frustration of most peoples' inability to comprehend the extremely well-documented arguments which we use to describe the process of our collective enslavement and exploitation. The most common explanation to be arrived at is that most people just "don't want to see" what is really going on. Extremely evil men and women who make up the world's power-elite have cleverly cultivated a virtual pasture so grass green that few people seldom, if ever, bother to look up from where they are grazing long enough to notice the brightly colored tags stapled to their ears. The same people who cannot see their enslavement for the pasture grass have a tendency to view as insane "conspiracy theorists" those of us who can see past the farm and into the parlor of his feudal lordship's castle. Finally, I understand why. It's not that those who don't see that their freedom is vanishing under the leadership of the power-elite "don't want to see it" -- they simply can't see what is happening to them because of the veils that block their view.
All human endeavors are a filtration process. Sports is one of the best examples. We play specific sports until we get kicked off the playground. The pro athletes we pay big bucks to watch just never got kicked off the playground. Where millions of kids play little league each spring, they are filtered out until there are about 50 guys who go to the World Series in October.

Behind the first veil: There are over six billion people on the planet. Most of them live and die without having seriously contemplated anything other than what it takes to keep their lives together.
Ninety percent of all humanity will live and die without having pierced the first veil.

The first veil: Ten percent of us will pierce the first veil and find the world of politics. We will vote, be active and have an opinion. Our opinions are shaped by the physical world around us; we have a tendency to
accept that government officials, network media personalities and other "experts" are voices of authority. Ninety percent of the people in this group will live and die without having pierced the second veil.

The second veil: Ten percent of us will pierce the second veil to explore the world of history, the relationship between man and government and the meaning of self-government through constitutional and common law. Ninety percent of the people in this group will live and die without having pierced the third veil.

The third veil: Ten percent of us will pierce the third veil to find that the resources of the world, including people, are controlled by extremely wealthy and powerful families whose incorporated old world assets have,
with modern extortion strategies, become the foundation upon which the world's economy is currently indebted.
Ninety percent of the people in this group will live and die without having pierced the fourth veil.

The fourth veil: Ten percent of us will pierce the fourth veil to discover the Illuminati, Freemasonry and the other secret societies. These societies use symbols and perform ceremonies that perpetuate the
generational transfers of arcane knowledge that is used to keep the ordinary people in political, economic and spiritual bondage to the oldest bloodlines on earth.
Ninety percent of the people in this group will live and die without having pierced the fifth veil.

The fifth veil: Ten percent of us will pierce the fifth veil to learn that the secret societies are so far advanced technologically that time travel and interstellar communications have no boundaries and controlling the
actions of people is what their members do as offhandedly as we tell our children when they must go to bed. Ninety percent of the people in this group will live and die without having pierced the sixth veil.

The sixth veil: Ten percent of us will pierce the sixth veil where the dragons and lizards and aliens we thought were the fictional monsters of childhood literature are real and are the controlling forces behind the secret societies.
Ninety percent of the people in this group will live and die without piercing the seventh veil.

The seventh veil: I do not know what is behind the seventh veil. I think it is where your soul is evolved to the point you can exist on earth and be the man Ghandi was, or the woman Peace Pilgrim was-people so
enlightened they brighten the world around them no matter what.

The eighth veil? Piercing the eighth veil probably reveals God and the pure energy that is the life force in all living things-which are, I think, one and the same. If my math is accurate there are only about 60,000 people on the planet who have pierced the sixth veil. The irony here is too incredible: Those who are stuck behind veils one through five have little choice but to view the people who have pierced the veils beyond them as insane. With each veil pierced, exponentially shrinking numbers of increasingly enlightened people are deemed insane by exponentially increasing masses of decreasingly enlightened people. Adding to the irony, the harder a "sixth or better veiler" tries to explain what he is able to see to those who can't, the more insane he appears to them.
Our enemy, the state

Behind the first two veils we find the great majority of people on the planet. They are tools of the state: Second veilers are the gullible voters whose ignorance justify the actions of politicians who send first
veilers off to die in foreign lands as cannon fodder -- their combined stations in life are to believe that the self-serving machinations of the power-elite are matters of national security worth dying for.
Third, fourth, fifth and sixth veilers are of increasing liability to the state because of their decreasing ability to be used as tools to consolidate power and wealth of the many into the hands of the power-elite. It is common for these people to sacrifice more of their relationships with friends and family, their professional careers and personal freedom with each veil they pierce.

Albert Jay Nock (1870-1945), author of "Our Enemy, the State" (1935), explained what happens to those who find the seventh and eighth veils: "What was the best that the state could find to do with an actual Socrates and an actual Jesus when it had them? Merely to poison one and crucify the other, for no reason but that they were too intolerably embarrassing to be allowed to live any longer."


And so now we know that it's not that our countrymen are so committed to their lives that, "they don't want to see," the mechanisms of their enslavement and exploitation. They simply "can't see" it as surely as I
cannot see what's on the other side of a closed curtain.

The purpose of this essay is threefold: 1.To help the handful of people in the latter veils to understand why the masses have little choice but to interpret their clarity as insanity; 2. To help people behind the first
two veils understand that living, breathing and thinking are just the beginning and; 3. Show people that the greatest adventure of our life is behind the next veil because that is just one less veil between ourselves
and God.

The Civil War, was it all for nothing?

A little history lesson ...

"No person
except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States,
at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty five years, and been fourteen Years a resident within the United States."  -- The Constitution for the United States of America

The above Presidential qualification was written nearly a century BEFORE the Civil War, and thus BEFORE the adoption of the so-called 14th Amendment, which defines U.S. [federal] citizenship ...

Whereas 14th Amendment, U.S. [federal] citizens (terms "persons", "residents", "individuals", "corporations", and "taxpayers") are NOT!!!!

The legal meaning of these words: 'citizen', 'person', 'resident' and 'United States' ... have all radically changed since the Civil War ... but notice the intelligent, wise, crafty, careful language of Our Founding Fathers' Constitution ... which reads
"at the time of the adoption of this Constitution" ... that says it all, folks!  It means a 'Citizen' in the FOUNDATIONAL CONTEXT, not the corporate, emancipated slave, post-Civil War language of the 14th Amendment.

"The purported 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution is and should be held to be ineffective, invalid, null, void and unconstitutional for the following reasons: The Joint Resolution proposing said Amendment was not submitted to or adopted by a Constitutional Congress (violative of Article I, 3, and Article V of the U.S. Constitution).  The Joint Resolution was not submitted to the President for his approval (violative of Article I, 7).  The proposed 14th Amendment was rejected by more than one-fourth of all the States then in the Union, and it was never ratified by three-fourths of all the States in the Union (violative of Article V)." -- House Congressional Record, June 13, 1967, page 15641 [see also Dyett v. Turner, 439 P.2d 266 (1968), and State v. Phillips, 540 P.2d 936 (1975) wherein the 14th Amendment was considered ineffective]

If  America is as angry as I am, you will realize a backlash so stunning it will  literally 'rock you out of your socks'....... And preferably totally out of the United States Senate.

The entire immigration bill is a farce...  Your action only confirms this really isn't about America.. it is about  self-serving politics......despicable at best. It has been said: 'Never Argue with an Idiot...They'll drag you down to their level!'

This is the most interesting things I've read in a long time. The sad thing about it, you can see it coming. I have always heard about this democracy countdown. It is interesting to see it in print.

About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh , had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:

'A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.

From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.  

The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:

1. from bondage to spiritual faith
2. from spiritual faith to great courage
3. from courage to liberty
4. from liberty to abundance
5. from abundance to complacency
6. from complacency to apathy
7. from apathy to dependence
8. From dependence back into bondage.'

Professor Joseph Olson of Hemline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the
2000 Presidential election:

Number of States won by: Gore: 19 Bush: 29 Square miles of land won by: Gore: 580,000 Bush: 2,427,000 Population of counties won by: Gore: 127 million Bush: 143 million Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Gore: 13.2 Bush: 2.1 Professor Olson adds: 'In aggregate, the map of the territory Bush won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of this great country. Gore's territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements welfare...

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the 'complacency and apathy phase' of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the 'governmental dependency' phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegals and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

A PROMINENT American once said, about immigrants, Few of their children in the country learn English... The signs in our streets have inscriptions in both languages ... Unless the stream of their importation could be turned they will soon so outnumber us that all the advantages we have will not be able to preserve our language, and even our government will become precarious.

This sentiment did not emerge from the rancorous debate over the immigration bill defeated last week in the Senate. It was not the lament of some guest of Lou Dobbs or a Republican candidate intent on wooing bedrock conservative votes. Guess again.

Voicing this grievance was Benjamin Franklin. And the language so vexing to him was the German spoken by new arrivals to Pennsylvania in the 1750s, a wave of immigrants whom Franklin viewed as the most stupid of their nation.

About the same time, a Lutheran minister named Henry Muhlenberg, himself a recent arrival from Germany, worried that the whole country is being flooded with ordinary, extraordinary and unprecedented wickedness and crimes. ... Oh, what a fearful thing it is to have so many thousands of unruly and brazen sinners come into this free air and unfenced country.

These German masses yearning to breathe free were not the only targets of colonial fear and loathing. Echoing the opinions of colonial editors and legislators, Ben Franklin was also troubled by the British practice of dumping its felons on America. With typical Franklin wit, he proposed sending rattlesnakes to Britain in return. (This did not, however, preclude numerous colonists from purchasing these convicts as indentured servants.)

And still earlier in Pennsylvania, the Scotch-Irish had bred discontent, as their penchant for squatting on choice real estate ran headlong against the colonys founders, the Penn family, and their genteel notions about who should own what.

Often, the disdain for the foreign was inflamed by religion. Bostons Puritans hanged several Friends after a Bay Colony ban on Quakerism. In Virginia, the Anglicans arrested Baptists. But the greatest scorn was generally reserved for Catholics usually meaning Irish, French, Spanish and Italians. Generations of white American Protestants resented newly arriving Papists, and even in colonial Maryland, a supposed haven for them, Roman Catholics were nonetheless forbidden to vote and hold public office.

Once independent, the new nation began to carve its views on immigrants into law. In considering New Yorks Constitution, for instance, John Jay later to become the first chief justice of the Supreme Court suggested erecting a wall of brass around the country for the exclusion of Catholics.

By 1790, with the United States Constitution firmly in place, the first federal citizenship law restricted naturalization to free white persons who had been in the country for two years. That requirement was later pushed back to five years and, in 1798, to 14 years.

Then, as now, politics was key. Federalists feared that too many immigrants were joining the opposition. Under the 1798 Alien Act with the threat of war in the air over French attacks on American shipping President John Adams had license to deport anyone he considered dangerous. Although his secretary of state favored mass deportations, Adams never actually put anybody on a boat.

Back then, the French warranted the most suspicion, but there were other worrisome aliens. A wave of wild Irish refugees was thought to harbor dangerous radicals. Harsh anti-coolie laws later singled out the Chinese. And, of course, the millions of involuntary immigrants from Africa and their offspring were regarded merely as persons held to service.

Scratch the surface of the current immigration debate and beneath the posturing lies a dirty secret. Anti-immigrant sentiment is older than America itself. Born before the nation, this abiding fear of the huddled masses emerged in the early republic and gathered steam into the 19th and 20th centuries, when nativist political parties, exclusionary laws and the Ku Klux Klan swept the land.

As we celebrate another Fourth of July, this picture of American intolerance clashes sharply with tidy schoolbook images of the great melting pot. Why has the land of all men are created equal forged countless ghettoes and intricate networks of social exclusion? Why the signs reading No Irish Need Apply? And why has each new generation of immigrants had to face down a rich glossary of now unmentionable epithets? Disdain for what is foreign is, sad to say, as American as apple pie, slavery and lynching.

That fence along the Mexican border now being contemplated by Congress is just the latest vestige of a venerable tradition, at least as old as John Jays wall of brass. Dont fence me in might be Americas unofficial anthem of unfettered freedom, but too often the subtext is, Fence everyone else out.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British
as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked
and burned. 

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another
had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or
hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their
lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. 

What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven
were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means,
well educated. 

But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full
well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships
swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to
pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British
that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the
Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions
were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted
the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward,
Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr.,
noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for
his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire.
The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home
and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a
few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying.
Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were
laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves,
returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks
later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston
suffered similar fates.

Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were
not wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means
and education. 

They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing
tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this
declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence,
we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred

They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history
books never told you a lot about what happened in the Revolutionary War.

We didn't fight just the British. We were British subjects at that time and
we fought our own government! Some of us take these liberties so much for
granted, but we shouldn't. So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of
July holiday, or any day, and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for
the price they paid.
