Dear AFSC Friend,

Long after a major event that gains global attention—and in many cases, before any attention has been paid—AFSC is in the thick of things. We help people recover from natural and human-made disasters in ways that address their needs and create pathways to peace and justice.

This issue of Toward Peace & Justice highlights a number of such efforts, including our work with those affected by a devastating immigration raid in Iowa, ongoing recovery and peacebuilding in Myanmar/Burma, and a recent AFSC-sponsored delegation of Iraqi leaders who visited with members of Congress and others here in the U.S.

As always, all this work is only possible because of your ongoing support. Thank you.

Peace,

U.S. visit by Iraqi leaders fosters understanding

Last month, two elected members of the Iraqi parliament engaged in dialogue with U.S. political leaders about how to find a path to peace and stability in Iraq. This AFSC-sponsored delegation was the first time that Iraqi parliamentarians visited with their counterparts in the U.S. Congress since the beginning of the war in Iraq.

Immigration chaos in Iowa

On May 12, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), together with the U.S. Iowa Northern District Attorney, carried out the largest single-site immigration raid in U.S. history. The raid at Agriprocessors, Inc., a kosher meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa, resulted in the detention of 389 women, men, and minors. AFSC and partner groups responded quickly to help detainees and their families, but fear and uncertainty continue to grip immigrants in the area.

Myanmar/Burma“Operation Self-Help”: Lessons from Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar/Burma

When Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar/Burma in May, Ven. U Karuna, a Buddhist monk, acted quickly. He formed an action group that conducted a needs assessment in a local township and then distributed basic supplies such as food, blankets, and mosquito nets. His story is one of several that are part of the newest update on AFSC-sponsored efforts to help the people of Myanmar/Burma recover from the aftermath of the deadly cyclone.
